Review: Afternoon Tea @ Cosmo Lounge, Hilton KL

ugh, Ugh, UGH!!!

Today is such a bad day, so Schadenfreuders and Schadenfreudresses alike, enjoy:

Bad no. 1: Weather is lousy
Evil no. 2: Everyone around me (except for my family members) are nasty due to the weather
Diabolical no. 3: Got splashed by fast cars when I was walking around the sidewalk! Had to avoid the sidewalk like a plague! Thank god for my knee high PVC Boots!
Nefarious no. 4: Teeth hurts like mad. Eating is an ORDEAL! Can't believe I'm saying that. Blasphemyyy...
Execrable no. 5: NOT A PRODUCTIVE DAY due to the rain. Delayed my entire schedule! And my ceiling is pee-ing again. OH JOY!

The girl from February

With the exception of one good thing: My skin looks nice today. :)

Anyway, you won't be sharing my misery. Instead you'll get to review my memory that was tucked away in the folders of February, when my parents and I are not 4000 miles apart. I make it sound like its darn tormenting being away from my parents while millions of pre-teens and teens are dying to stay away from their parents... but trust me, when your parents are abay, you'll realize that the responsibility is all on you! So, if you haven't even know how to clean your room, stop whining about your mom being naggy and daggy.

Bonne Maman preserves

Smooth and velvety cuppa

Flowery infusions

Yes, this strand of memory, of me and my parents, sipping on Ronnefeldt tea, chugging down coffee and savoring scones slapped with a generous amount of Bonne Maman preserves.

Traditional English
One can choose from two types of three tier afternoon tea sets: Malaysian or Traditional English. We went for both. Each set, if not mistaken costs around RM 68 but with the card, one can get discounts. I think it's 10 or 20 percent...

Plain scones only

The scones from both sets are decent. It is delicious, eaten with preserves or just as it is. It has a lovely hint of saltiness that every scone should have (according to me and my mom) and it has this cake-bread texture. As you can see from the perforation on the scones, there's quite a lot of air going on. The scones are neither too dry nor too moist. Oh, the bonus is, they are served piping hot. Maximum enjoyment.

The finger sandwiches were delicious too. They actually used wholemeal bread! One of the sandwiches was pumpkin bread with beef. We passed the beef but ate the aromatic bread. :)

Desserts
I feel that Hilton KL has never failed with their desserts. We rarely experience S-bombs (Sugar bombs) with their desserts, with the exception of the currant jelly. I felt that it tasted slightly artificial despite the amount of berries used for the topping.

Poppyseed-orange cake, chocolate cheesecake, fudge cake, crumble tart
Otherwise, the cakes were tolerable in terms of sweetness. My favorite would be the chocolate cheesecake. I'm saying this because I love cheesecake, a lot. I would appreciate a cheesecake for my birthday. :) *hint to mom and dad*

Unfortunately, I'll be celebrating my birthday alone at the States. I think it's Washington. :(

Malaysian tea set

It's interesting how they have roti jala, chicken rendang and glutinous rice, pandan chicken, tofu with chili dressing and a spiced cake as savories. For people like me, who rarely have the opportunity to take pleasure in such delights, this is certainly divine.

Malaysian delights

Yet, in terms of savories, I felt that the Malaysian offerings pale in comparison to the English set. Not that they tasted bad but because wholemeal sandwiches gives me more of an excuse to enjoy my desserts without the word "guilt" etched all over my brain.

Traditional kuihs - ketayap, angku kuih, kuih lapis, kuih talam
Initially, I was very skeptical of these kuih muih. I mean, it's made in a hotel setting. I always have this pre-conception that buying kuih muih from an old auntie at the sidewalk is going to be superior to what is churned our from a kitchen in a hotel. Alas, I was wrong! The array of kuihs here is some of the best that I've eaten. The angku kuih, kuih ketayap, kuih lapis (MY FAVORITE) and kuih talam were the best!

Otak-otak sandwich
In the Malaysian tea set, instead of fancy smoked salmon or turkey ham sandwiches, you get otak-otak sandwiches. It's pretty dry and not punch enough. :(

On the whole, I rate Hilton's afternoon tea as one of the best in KL. Food wise and price wise.
