Review: Afternoon Tea @ Shangri La Lobby Lounge, Kuala Lumpur

I haven't been to Shangri La for high tea for ages. So right after our short stint at Ipoh, we had our tea fix at Shangri-La. I think by now, it is fairly obvious that my entire family loves afternoon tea.

Ronnefeldt Tea - I had lemongrass
At first, we thought that it might still be the same old RM 45 deal. How wrong we were. With RM 55 per tea set, Shangri KL has caught up with the inflation.

Don't fret though, as the items tasted better and are on par with Hilton KL's Lobby Lounge three tier of goodies.

Scones, mascarpone and jam

The Bonne Maman and mascarpone stays.

So where the change might be?

Obviously, the scones. The scones were lighter and much more fragrant compared to the scones we had the first time. Plus, there were more raisins in the raisin scone than our first time around. Additonally, there was also a light pastry puff-like item.

Anybody care to enlighten me on what is that stick like thing near the scones? It was really good too! It was quite airy yet crispy.

Assorted sandwiches
Instead of the standard finger sandwiches that are made from white bread, Shangri La had decided to amp things up. As you can see, each sandwich is prepared with different bread and filling. There are wholemeal, brioche, wheat and sesame roll, mantau and ciabatta. How awesome is that? Now, this is good afternoon tea!

This is better than the ones I had in my first few visits.

Also, you can tell that more effort is placed in preparing the sandwiches. They actually include salad greens now as opposed to the oh-so-boring cucumber slices for their sandwiches.

Pastries - Clearly, there are lesser items now but the quality has improved!

Many will prefer the RM 45 version as they have reduced the amount of sweets. On the bright side, this means that you have an extra excuse to order one of their pretty artisan cakes and you get better pastries.

I really enjoyed the opera cake, which was not too sweet and laden with the exquisite taste of espresso. The berry tartlet and madeleine was scrumptious. My least favorite would be the profiterole though. To be honest, I'm not a profiterole person.

Heh.

Each afternoon tea set comes with a pot of tea or coffee. I suggest that you go for the tea as it can last about three to four rounds. This gives you an excuse to sit back longer and have a chat. Or perhaps, admire KL Tower.

Little things:

-Service: Very prompt

-Portions: Reasonable. Gone the large portions. They've decided to trade it with quality instead of quantity.

-Budget: At RM 55, Shangri-La's high tea set is still the cheapest amongst the five star players. If you have the discount card, you'll get 20 percent off!
